Easier, yet more important than you think!

Firstly I will admit two things about myself: One is I hate to write, anything, the second is I love to run! Really ! I actually love to run and miss it if I go too long without one . It drives me nuts when I drive by other runners and I can't get out there with them!

But I found that I can make the best of things by combining the 2! I can use my time running to compose my newsletters! Especially as I do my best, clearest thinking while out there pounding the pavement.

I wanted to start out with a topic that is near and dear to me, backups. As my career started out in the banking and legal industries, Socsofcc/founderprofile , I learned early on the importance of documenting and backing up everything! (Also know to some as CYA.)

What are backups? Some people don't realize that it simply means making a copy of your critical data (back to this later) onto a:

  • Memory stick or data key (not my favorite option - too easy to lose or overwrite, yet easy and convenient from small amounts of data).
  • CD (S) or DVD (S)
  • External Drive
  • Another computer or server
  • Tape drive - most servers are backed up to tapes.
  • Web-based services such as www.ezbackup.com (my current favorite for home based and/or small businesses)

Backing up your data means storing it anywhere other that where it normally lives, your local hard drive.

What is Disaster Recovery? Taking that backup (copy) of your data and storing it off- site:

  • Web-based server (again my favorite as it does automatic backups and its off site too!
  • On-site fire proof safe
  • Safe Deposit Box
  • Employee's car or home in a fire proof safe

Simply put Backups are like insurance for your data should your hard drive fail. With Disaster Recovery being an umbrella policy that covers you in a major disaster such as fire, hurricane or flooding.

Maybe you think you don't have critical data to backup?...

I had always had a company issued laptop that I backed up onto the local server, like a dutiful IT person would :). Then I had my own personal desktop and it was just that, personal -- used for the family. Mostly web surfing, games no critical data, right?

Well I thought so until the day I got a scary message (yes, scary even to me!) while booting it said that my hard drive had a problem and I suddenly remembered that I had all the family pictures from the past 2 years on that hard drive, yikes! Digital pictures from our digital camera that had never been printed or you guessed it, backed up!

I vowed right then and there to Mike (then 6 yrs old) "if Mommy fixes the computer problem we are going straight to Staples and buying a CD burner". So yes I did work around the problem and currently have all my digital photos on CDs and safely stored in my fire proof safe :).

You probably have some critical data , too. So back it up: Be it photos, music files (that you paid for), financial data, emails, anything that lives on your computer, that you don't ever want to lose or try to re-create, and keep it in a safe place!

Burning Your Data to CD(s)

Insert a rewritable CD in your drive.

Go to My Documents

Go to Edit/Select All or hold down the CTRL button while hitting the letter A.

Right click and select Send To, then select your CD or DVD drive (it will take few minutes to copy the files, you will see a prompt that says there are files waiting to be written, ignore it.)

When done, go to My Computer, click on the CD drive.

Then in the left hand corner click on Write these files to CD.

When completed the CD will be ejected. Label, date and store in a safe place.
